Why ctabuild failed

Ctabuild was a web analytics tool project that ultimately didn't succeed. Here's what went wrong and what I learned from the experience.

  • Spent too much time tweaking UI design
  • Didn't make an MVP, and test that or perfect that
  • Kept adding new features, without perfecting core features
  • Spent too little time on marketing
  • Spent too little energy explaining the value propersiution.

What was wrong about the idea itself?

The setup was too complex for users. Asking WordPress users to put CSS tags on things they wanted to track, turned out too difficult. There was too much support required. Customers are busy, it's too easy for them to think "Ahh, whatever. Do i really need this?", and then bounce.

Learnings

Importantly, didn't think how I would market it, before it was made. Knowing how to sell, is key. Most SaaS-influencers have audiences that buy, the same principles won't apply to you or me. They have it easy.
